Webuild projects in Queensland

In 1973, we entered the Queensland Market. We began working on road construction and small mining projects across the state, and soon after, the business secured two pipeline contracts near Gladstone, one for water and the other for limestone. These projects strengthened our presence in Queensland as a project delivery company and unlocked the potential for the business to extend further into the East Coast and Papua New Guinea markets across a range of industries.
Our Brisbane-based team is expanding and contributing to some of our most ambitious and technically demanding infrastructure projects. With Webuild and Clough working together to support the diverse local communities where we operate, we are helping to ensure a bright future for Queensland.
Queensland’s first pumped-storage scheme
A predecessor of Webuild, was part of the consortium that built the and Power Station. Situated in Queensland, Australia, the Wivenhoe Dam is a critical infrastructure that provides flood mitigation and water storage for the region. The Wivenhoe Hydro Power Station is Queensland’s first pumped-storage scheme.
When it came into operation, its pioneering technology was to allow the power station to be controlled remotely from Brisbane. It could be switched on automatically in less than 20 seconds in case of an emergency such as a failure in the power grid. Its centrifugal pumps were the largest in the world at the time of installation, each weighing 1,500 tonnes; pump capacity was 207 cubic metres per second.
Securing water for generations in QLD
Through our Australian subsidiary, Clough, in 2009, we delivered the Toowoomba Pipeline Project, a vital piece of infrastructure during one of Australia’s worst droughts.
With dam levels in Toowoomba dropping below 8%, the 38km pipeline connecting Wivenhoe Dam to Cressbrook Dam was fast-tracked by the Queensland Government to safeguard a long-term water supply for the region.
Designed to deliver up to 14,200 megalitres of water per year, the pipeline ensured water security for the growing Toowoomba community.
This landmark project was not only a technical success, but it was also delivered ahead of schedule with a strong safety record.
Supporting the community of Queensland
With our Australian subsidiary Clough, we have over 50 years of experience in Queensland, supporting the local community by providing employment, education and business opportunities.

University of Queensland
Webuild is proud to continue its commitment to engage and inspire the next generation of engineers through the Webuild Indigenous Engineering Scholarship, delivered in partnership with the University of Queensland (UQ).
Established in 2022, the Indigenous Engineering Scholarship was developed to support and empower Indigenous students pursuing studies in engineering at UQ. With one scholarship awarded to a female student, and one awarded to a male student, the initiative reflects Webuild’s commitment to diversity, gender equity, and building meaningful inclusion in the engineering and construction industries.
