AGL’s Kwinana Gas Power Generation: groundbreaking ceremony for the Project
Clough, part of the Webuild Group, has marked a major milestone in strengthening Western Australia’s energy security, with a groundbreaking ceremony for the $190-million Design and Construction contract for AGL’s Kwinana Gas Power Generation (K2) Project.
The milestone was marked with AGL Managing Director and CEO Damien Nicks, Western Australian Premier Roger Cook and Energy Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson.
Following the award earlier this year of the design and construct contract for the 220-megawatt (MW) open-cycle, dual-fuel gas turbine power station co-located with AGL’s existing Kwinana Swift facility, the project represents a significant step forward in enhancing the reliability of the South West Interconnected System (SWIS) while supporting Western Australia’s energy transition.
K2 will deliver fast-start, flexible generation, providing critical backup capacity to support the growing share of renewable energy in Western Australia’s power system. The facility will strengthen AGL’s energy portfolio in the state and aligns with the Western Australian Government’s commitment to retire all state-owned coal-fired power generation by 2030.
The project will also supply power during periods of peak demand, offering a lower-emissions alternative within the state’s evolving energy mix.
Commenting on the milestone, Webuild Senior Executive Vice President of Operations and Clough Executive President Marco Assorati said: “For more than a century, we have been trusted to connect communities, deliver critical infrastructure, and power the growth of Western Australia. K2 reflects our ongoing commitment to strengthening the state’s future while supporting Australia’s transition to more sustainable and reliable energy.”
Founded in Western Australia in 1919 and part of Webuild Group, Clough has delivered more than 200 major projects in WA alone. With K2 now underway, the company is currently delivering eight projects across the state. From iconic bridges such as the Narrows, Stirling and the heritage-listed Mt Henry Bridge, to the Graham Farmer Freeway and tunnel network, and the development of WA’s energy and resources sector, Clough has continually evolved to meet the state’s infrastructure needs, cementing its position as one of Australia’s most experienced engineering and construction companies.
The project is expected to create around 200 construction jobs, boosting local employment, supply chains and regional capability, with operations set to commence by the end of 2027.
Clough, together with e2o, part of the Webuild Group, looks forward to partnering with AGL Energy and stakeholders to safely and successfully deliver this critical energy infrastructure for Western Australia.
