Milano, December 9, 2020 – A new award for the Sydney Metro Northwest project, now Project of the Year 2020. The project, for which Webuild has built the award-winning viaduct that includes the skytrain bridge, stood out for its engineering complexity and its innovation. It contributed to the development of the Australian sustainable mobility system and the employment levels, with over 22 thousand people at work between 2011 and 2019. Inaugurated in May 2019, it was delivered on time, and with a billion dollars threshold below budget.

The award was presented at the 2020 National Infrastructure Awards, in Sydney. The Premiers of NSW and the State of Victoria, and the Deputy Prime Minister, thanked the companies for their commitment to continuing their work, during the COVID-19 crisis, underlining their fundamental role in supporting Australia’s future economic recovery.

The Sydney Metro Northwest, measures 36 km in length. It is the first fully automated rail system in Australia, and the first phase of the Sydney Metro, a network of new underground lines that represents the largest public transport work in the history of the country. The heart of the Sydney Metro Northwest is the viaduct. Built by Webuild, it measures four kilometers and connects the areas of Bella Vista and Rouse Hill. It is equipped with a cable-stayed and curved bridge of 270 meters: the skytrain bridge, already won the “2018 Project of the Year ” according to Engineering News-Record (ENR), the US trade magazine, and“ 2018 Global Best Project ”reserved for the railway sector.

Australia represents an increasingly strategic market, for Webuild. This is due to its potential, in terms of sustainable mobility and renewable energy. Snowy 2.0 is an emblem of this, being the largest hydroelectric project in the country. The Group is currently working on the project to expand the network of plants under the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme. Webuild is also building the Forrestfield-Airport Link, the 8.5-kilometer-long light railway line that will allow residents to travel between the center and the suburbs in just 20 minutes, compared to the current 45 minutes, required by car.
