Webuild & Clough: Our commitment to Victoria
29/06/2023 - Webuild’s journey in Australia began in the 1970s when it entered the Victorian infrastructure market to build the Melbourne Underground Rail Loop, better known today as the City Loop. This project cemented Webuild’s position as a key player in Australia and unlocked the potential for the business to extend its operations across the nation. Since then, Victoria has become a key strategic market for the Group, demonstrated by its commitment to develop its people and support the communities in which it operates.
Over time, Webuild has grown, transforming itself into a global leader in the design and construction of large, complex projects in the sectors of sustainable mobility, hydropower, water and green buildings.
Completed projects in Australia include the skytrain cable-stayed bridge and viaduct for Sydney Metro Northwest and the Airport Line (formerly known as Forrestfield-Airport Link) in Perth. Those under construction include the excavation of a metro line that will connect Sydney to a new airport, the Snowy 2.0 hydropower project together with Clough, and the North East Link road tunnels in Melbourne, where Webuild is participating in tenders for other major infrastructure projects envisioned for Victoria.
Marco Assorati, Webuild Executive Director Oceania, said: “Together, Webuild and Clough are both better positioned than ever before as leaders in the Australian construction market. With the delivery of the NEL project, we are continuing our growth in Melbourne, which is where Webuild first set its sights in Australia all those years ago. We are excited for this new chapter with Clough and look forward to the continued growth of both businesses as we work together to provide sustainable infrastructure for the people of Victoria whilst making a positive impact in the community.”
Webuild is committed to increasing its corporate social responsibility in Victoria. It has been working closely with universities and community organisations to support education, promote STEM skills learning, and provide opportunities through scholarships and graduate and internship programmes. This year, the Group awarded a scholarship to a female engineering student at the University of Melbourne. It is also collaborating with the University of Technology Sydney, and recently signed an agreement with the University of Queensland to run a similar programme.
As Webuild and Clough grow together and embark on the delivery of some of the biggest and most complex projects in Australia, they share a united purpose to deliver a sustainable future for the business, its people, and the communities in which they operate.
ABOUT THE NORTH EAST LINK PROJECT
Webuild, as part of the Spark Consortium, was awarded the design and construction contract to deliver the North East Link Primary Package in Melbourne in 2021. The North East Link is the largest private-public partnership for an infrastructure project in Australia, and it has a strong focus on sustainability.
The project involves the construction of twin three-lane tunnels approximately 6.5 kilometres long. Once complete, it will be the longest road tunnel in Victoria, providing an essential link in the city’s freeway network, reducing congestion and travel times for tens of thousands of motorists. The project will enable a more sustainable future by taking 15,000 trucks off local roads every day and reducing trave times by up to 35 minutes for commuters.
Webuild is a global leader in the design and construction of large, complex projects in the sectors of sustainable mobility (rail, metro, bridges, roads, ports), hydropower (dams, power plants), water (treatment and desalination plants, wastewater management, irrigation dams) and green buildings (civil and industrial buildings, airports, stadiums, hospitals).
It supports clients in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) established by the United Nations. The recognised leader in infrastructure for the water sector, it operates in 50 countries, generating 70 percent of its revenues from international markets. It has 83,000 direct and indirect employees from 100 nationalities, and a supply chain of more than 17,500 businesses.
In its 117 years of applied engineering on more than 3,200 projects, the Group has built 14,118 kilometres of rail and metro lines, 82,509 kilometres of roads and highways, 1,018 kilometres of bridges and viaducts, 3,396 kilometres of tunnels, and 313 dams and hydropower plants.
Projects include the Genoa San Giorgio Bridge, the second Panama Canal, the Lake Mead Third Intake hydraulic project near Las Vegas in the United States, the Airport Line in Perth, Australia and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center in Athens. Projects under construction include the Brenner Base Tunnel, Line 4 of the Milan metro system, the Terzo Valico dei Giovi-Nodo di Genova in Italy, and the North East Link of Melbourne in Australia.
In 2022, the Group had revenues of €8.2 billion, total orders worth more than €53 billion, and projects that will help reduce annual CO2 emissions by 25 million tonnes. Webuild, subject to the direction and coordination of Salini Costruttori S.p.A., is headquartered in Italy and is listed on the Milan stock exchange (WBD; WBD.MI; WBD:IM). Since 2021, it is member of the MIB ESG, the index of Italian companies with the best ESG practices.
