Above ground construction under way at Women and Babies Hospital in Perth

Above-ground construction is officially underway at the Women and Babies Hospital site in Perth, Western Australia marking a major milestone in delivery of one of the State’s flagship health infrastructure projects.

Following months of piling and concrete pours, the project has entered a new phase with installation of multiple self-climbing jumpform systems and commencement of first floor construction.

Jumpform construction supports safe and rapid building of the hospital's vertical structures, such as lifts and stairwells. Additionally, the Women and Babies Hospital project will use a modular-style building system that allows major structural components to be assembled more efficiently on-site. The system combines precast concrete columns, integrated steel floor beams, and precast floor panels to create the structural framework for each level of the hospital.

In coming months, a concrete pour on the first floor is planned, with a series of pours for the hospital’s ground floor slab scheduled to take place later this year.

The fully electric 274-bed Women and Babies Hospital is comprised of a main 12-storey block and an adjoining six-storey block.

The hospital’s main 12-storey block includes:

  • inpatient facilities for gynaecology and maternity patients
  • a neonatology unit for newborns needing specialised care
  • operating theatres
  • outpatient clinics

The neighbouring six-storey block provides a warmer, less clinical feel than the main block and includes:

  • A family birth centre – with an independent entrance separate to the main hospital entrance
  • Parent and patient accommodation - designed to support people living in rural and remote communities who need to temporarily relocate to Perth for specialised healthcare services at the hospital.
  • A sanctuary - designed to provide dedicated space to provide respite and support patients and their families or guests.
