First Western Sydney Airport metro train arrives at Webuild-delivered Orchard Hills facility

Webuild, as part of the Parklife Metro consortium, recognised a major milestone for fellow consortium partner Siemens, with the arrival of the first Western Sydney Airport Line metro train at the Orchard Hills Stabling and Maintenance Facility (SMF).  

Webuild is delivering the Design and Construct component of the Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport Line, Stations, Systems, Trains, Operations and Maintenance (SSTOM) Package.  

The train's arrival at the purpose-built SMF, delivered by Webuild, marks a defining point in the project's progress. It follows a period of delivery across the corridor:  

• More than 92 kilometres of single rail installed 
• More than 6,400 tonnes of Australian rail steel placed 
• More than 76,000 sleepers laid 
• Approximately 60,000 cubic metres of concrete poured across the alignment, including at the Orchard Hills SMF 

These figures reflect the scale of delivery: the facility's capacity to receive, stable and maintain the new Siemens-manufactured fleet ahead of testing and operations.  

Delivering infrastructure of this scale requires close coordination across contractors, technology partners and stakeholders, underpinned by a disciplined commitment to safety.  

Webuild continues to work closely with Siemens and the broader Parklife Metro consortium as the project moves toward dynamic testing, with the remaining 11 trains set to arrive progressively over the coming months and dynamic testing due to commence later this year.

About the project  

The Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport Line Stations, Systems, Trains, Operations and Maintenance (SSTOM) project is being delivered under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. It includes the construction of six stations between the St Marys interchange station and the Western Sydney Aerotropolis station, a workshop and maintenance depot at Orchard Hills, and the superstructure, signalling systems, and mechanical and electrical systems for the entire line, together with the supply of new driverless trains. 

The Western Sydney Airport Line will extend the Sydney Metro network, , and change the way people travel in one of the country's most populated cities. It will support growth across Western Sydney, and thousands of jobs during construction. 

The project is commissioned by the NSW and Australian (Federal) governments and is being delivered by Webuild as part of the Parklife Metro Consortium, which is carrying out the civil works (Siemens also holds a stake in this scope). Webuild is also part of the project company, alongside Plenary Group, Siemens Mobility and RATP Dev. As part of the consortium, Webuild will also be involved in managing and carrying out maintenance activities across the 23-kilometre line for 15 years following its opening to the public.
